The National Exhibition and Convention Center (Shanghai) (hereinafter referred to as the NECC (Shanghai)), dubbed as the Four Leaf Clover has become a new magnet and growth pole for the exhibition industry in Shanghai. As revealed by Shanghai Municipal Commission of Commerce, a total of 318 exhibitions (up by 11.9% year on year) were held in major exhibition venues in Shanghai in the first half of the year with a total exhibition area of 6.5219 million square meters (up by 24.6% year on year). Officially Opened for operation in March 2015, the NECC (Shanghai) has a total construction area of 1.8688 million square meters, accounting for 28.6% of the total construction area for exhibition venues in Shanghai. So far, the NECC (Shanghai) has attracted about 3 million exhibitors and visitors both from home and abroad.

A total of 4 million square meters of exhibition has been signed up in the NECC (Shanghai) this year, including a number of mega exhibitions with a single exhibition covering over 300,000 square meters of area such as Auto Shanghai and CMEF exhibitions that were held in the first half of the year and Furniture China to be held in September this year. The NECC (Shanghai) is expected to bring an increment of 2 million square meters to the exhibition industry in Shanghai.

Statistics also show that a total of 131 international exhibitions (up by 6.5% year on year) with a total of 5.2867 million square meters were held in Shanghai in the first half of the year, an increase of 26.8% year-on-year. The double-digit increase in exhibition area of international exhibitions indicates that the exhibition level and international influence of Shanghai’s exhibition industry is increasing sharply. The monthly exhibition area of international exhibitions held in Shanghai was over 1 million square meters in May for the third straight months. Additionally, in the first half of the year, there were a total of 187 domestic exhibitions held in Shanghai (rose 16.1% year on year) with a total exhibition area of 1.2638 million square meters (up by 12.6% year on year).

The exhibition industry, featuring “smoke-free and green”, is a hen that keeps laying golden eggs. Globally, the percentage of exhibition industry in the GDP growth is 1:9, whereas this number in Canton Fair is 1:11.5, said Wang Zhiping, Board Chairman of Shanghai Expo Co., Ltd. Starting from the first exhibition held in early March, a total of about 900,000 meals has been sold in exhibitions held the NECC (Shanghai). During each exhibition held in the NECC (Shanghai), it was difficult to book a room in the hotels in the area near the NECC (Shanghai).

As revealed by Shanghai Municipal Commission of Economy and Informatization, the 17th session China International Industry Fair (CIIF 2015) is going to be held from 3 to 7 November 2015 at NECC (Shanghai). This will be the first time CIIF uses a venue other than Shanghai New International Expo Center since its establishment in 2001. CIIF 2015 will increase its exhibition area significantly to over 220,000 square meters and is estimated to attract over 2,100 exhibitors and over 110,000 professional visitors.
